Viral Ads

Viral ads have been a hot topic for some time now. With the development of communication technology, something like a video can go around the world within minutes.

While the effectiveness of viral ads is questionable, and really related on the success of the video itself, they are nonetheless a very interesting form of marketing. One of the most interesting aspects of viral videos, to me anyway, is the way that a lot of the time they have nothing to do with the product they are trying to sell.

I just came across this commercial....see if you pick what the ad is for before the end of the video.

I would love to get some links to other viral ads that you've seen. Post below!

  1. I must say that was an amazing viral video it was very attention grabing.. I was thinking maybe it was for some country brand or for something health related... never would have guessed it! Viral ads are questionable, but they're a good way to grab attention and spread the word..

I posted a viral video recently as well but it took a different direction.. the viral video was actually related to the brand and was really successful. It was a great strategy especially for a non-for-profit organisation. Here's a link to it:

  2. The problem with most "viral" campaigns are that they never "go viral".

We often misuse the word "viral". You don't make a viral ad, you make something that is interesting and worth sharing, and with any luck it will go viral.

Looking forward to seeing if anyone else has something to share here!

  3. I totally agree Wags. And this raises the question of when do we classify a viral video as being viral? And what is it up until that point? If only 500 people had seen the Samsung video from above, is it just a poor internet add? Or a failed viral video...
Obviously their aim was to make a 'viral' video...but if it's only viral once it spreads, then what is it up to that point...?

  4. Viruses spread. If they don't spread, they're technically not a virus. Likewise, if a video doesn't spread, it's not "viral". It's just a video. :)

    Nice work, Luke!

  5. Viral seems to be the way to go. Everyone knows the ads that work, the ones that play on the consumers mind, are of course the one's that grab their attention, and nothing does it better than an ad sent by your mate which is better than most of what we see on TV.

This bad boy was made a few years ago by starburst, it was probably not intended as a viral video when it was first created, but as viral goes, I received it a few days ago off friends, and it seems to be spreading.
